Finding Motivation When You Just Want to Sleep

I don’t think you can have a conversation about fitness without discussing motivation. Motivation is that force that gets you out of bed, up off the couch, or just off your butt and moving.  Because it’s so important motivation is not a subject I’m going to just approach, write about it once and then walk away. It’s something we will come back to often because it is an ongoing thing that never goes away while you’re finding fitness.  

So let’s start with getting up in the morning to work out. I’m a pretty early riser (6-7am even on weekends), not by choice—probably by genetics. That being said, I will admit that I do not like getting up to work out. In my heart I know I should get up every other morning, at least, and go for a run but finding the motivation to get out of bed, get dressed and put on my running shoes is beyond difficult.  So trust me, I get it.

We will ignore the negatives of getting up earlier to work out. Part of motivation is looking at the positives and letting go of the negative stuff that keeps you from doing something. Let’s, instead, focus on the positives of getting up and working out first thing in the morning….. 

1.       It crosses one thing off your to-do list—We all have these crazy busy lives. Work, school, taking care of others, taking care of ourselves,  cleaning, cooking, grocery shopping, and the list goes on. It’s difficult to squeeze in fitness so why don’t we just do it first thing and it’s done for the day.

2.       It only hurts for a little bit—Okay working out shouldn’t really hurt. I am talking about that mental hurt of peeling yourself out of your warm bed even before you need to just so you can go for walk, run, or whatever form of exercise you chose. From experience, I can tell you that once you get into a routine it gets easier. You just have to suck it up, start the routine, and stick to it. WARNING: Do not break your routine because then you have to start all over again.

3.       ENERGY—There is an energy boost that you get from working out in the morning that you’ll probably won’t get working out any other time of day.  Getting the blood pumping early in the day seems to last throughout the day. This alone should be great motivation for getting up!
 
These are just three positives. Once you get going you will find more. In fact, come back and share them with us. I’ve included a short article that focuses on getting up and running in the morning but it translates to any other form of exercise.


I’m going to lead by example. I’m going to set my alarm to get up tomorrow morning (a Sunday, no less) and go for a run.

Hints for Group Fitness Novices

I have a confession to make. I am not just an ordinary woman constantly searching for fun ways to stay fit. Nope. I’m actually considered a fitness professional—or at least I used to be. For seven very enjoyable years I was a group fitness instructor. I probably would still be instructing if only there were more hours in the day. It was a truly gratifying experience and I miss it.

This brings us to our first topic...Group Fitness—the Basics.  I have to admit that I’m pretty biased when it comes to group fitness. It’s a passion that started long before I got my certifications to teach. It goes back to taking aerobics class at about the age of 11 at the Nautilus gym in Phoenix, AZ. This was back when we worked out on carpeted floors and jumped around in leotards, tights, and, yes, leg warmers.  Poor fashion choices aside, the energy and fun of the group fitness classes has continued to be one of my favorite ways to stay in shape.  

For those of you who are new to group fitness walking into your first class can be a bit daunting.  Maybe you’ve stood outside a class at the gym thinking, “Wow, that looks like fun but there’s no way I can do that.”  My answer is—you won’t know until you try. Here are a few pieces of advice to make you feel more comfortable joining in a new class. 

Step Into the Room—This is really the first step. You have to take a deep breath and go inside. Sure, it may be intimidating and it seems like everyone else has been taking the class forever but, remember, everyone in that room had to step inside the room for the first time, too.  You’re only going to be new this one time.
 
Introduce Yourself—Most instructors get to class a little early to set up and cue up their music. Walk up and introduce yourself and let him or her know that you are new. This serves a couple purposes; it lets your instructor know to pay a little, quiet extra attention to you throughout class and the instructor can let you know up front what to expect and what equipment you may need for class. A good instructor will make you feel welcome and help ease some of your anxiety.

If the instructor is late, pick a person near you and ask a few questions. If the class involves equipment go ahead and ask what you’ll need. Most students I’ve met are more than willing to help out newbies. They are always happy to have a new member to their fitness team.

Get a Good View—It’s important to find a spot where you can see the instructor. You may not want to be up front and center but don’t hide in the back of the room where you can’t see or be seen. From a student’s point of view, you’ll want to be able to see what is going on in the front of the room. If you’re in a group weight class or yoga it’s important to see good form. If you’re taking a class that moves like Zumba or Kickboxing you just want to see what the steps are.  

From an instructor’s point of view, our job is to make sure individuals are following good form and make sure everyone is safely moving through the class. If you are hiding in the back the instructor may not be able to give you needed corrections or verbal cues that can help you out.  
 
Return to Class At Least Two More Times—I was taught as an instructor to encourage a new person to come to class at least three times before they decide it’s not for them. It’s almost a guarantee that the first time in class will be more about figuring out what is going on than working out and having fun. It may be very frustrating and you may leave feeling a little discouraged. Go back for two more tries. You’ll be more familiar with the mechanics of the class and be able to concentrate on your body and how it’s feeling. Hopefully less frustration will equal more fun.

If the Class Isn’t For You, Move On—The cool thing about group fitness is there is a variety of classes out there. If the class you picked just doesn’t make you happy after putting in an honest effort, feel free to move on. Check out the schedule, ask around, and find something that fits you better. Even if you do like the class you picked, it’s good to mix up your schedule and try other classes. Variety is good for the brain and body.

Jessica Smith, a personal trainer and group fitness instructor adds a couple extra tips in an article posted on FitSugar:

"If there is something you cant do yet, please don't do it."--If something is too complicated or outside your current fitness level, do not attempt to do it. Look for modifications (most instructors will offer some). "Avoid injury," Smith writes, "by progressing slowly..."

"Listen to your body--the whole class"--She wisely advises not to get swept up in the excitement and the music and ignore how our body is feeling. Take breaks, drink water, and pay attention to your breathing.
 
Remember it’s about having fun and getting fit at the same time. Go out, find a class and give it a try.

Welcome


Hello and welcome to Finding Fitness.  I wanted to use this first post to introduce myself and let you know the reason for this blog. My name is Jami. I’m a middle-aged (ugh) mom of a teenager, I work full-time and I am finishing up my Bachelor’s degree in Technical Communications. My life is pretty busy but I try to keep in shape despite the lack of enough hours in the day

This is a blog for those non-athletes out there who are on a quest to get in shape and/or stay in shape. As someone who fits this description and has spent almost 20 years on this quest, I know how daunting the finding fitness can be.  I know how it is to walk into the weight room at the gym and feel totally out of place among the bulky power lifters. I know how it feels to feel so discouraged by not seeing immediate progress that you just want to give up. As the saying goes, I’ve been there, done that, and I still own the t-shirt.

I have a philosophy about fitness. What you’re doing should be fun or you shouldn’t do it. Fitness should not be that job you hate. It should be something you look forward to doing. If the fitness routine you are doing fills you with dread, it’s probably time you found something that makes you smile. I’m not saying that fitness shouldn’t be a challenge. It definitely should be. But at the same time it should be something you like. There are enough forms of fitness out there; I’m sure there’s at least one thing that will suit you. 
 
Let me give you an example. I’m a group fitness junkie (more on that later). Years ago I was going to Spin class every Sunday morning. I told myself that it was great cardio but I found myself watching the clock through every class. I just wanted it to be over. After a while I realized I just didn’t like it. Why would I spend an hour of my day doing something that felt at times like torture when there were classes like Turbo Kickboxing that made me happy and still gave me a wonderful cardio workout?

One last thing…my goal is to make this an interactive experience. A fitness discussion of sorts.  I welcome feedback and comments. I want to know what you think, what you tried, and how you are doing on this fitness quest. Keep coming back and, next time, bring a friend. We can all find fitness together.
